COPD motivated me to stop smoking

What was your motivation to stop smoking?

My motivation to stop smoking was being told I had COPD.

How was smoking impacting your day-to-day life?

Smoking wasn’t impacting my day-to-day life; I had never considered quitting until my diagnosis.

What do you think is the most difficult thing about giving up smoking and how did our service support you to overcome it?

The most difficult part was breaking the habit. The advice and suggestions really helped and made a lot of sense.

What benefits have you had from quitting?

I’ve noticed a big improvement in my breathing. I no longer get out of breath as easily and can walk further and for longer.

What stop smoking medications did you use and what did you like best about them?

Initially I used a combination of patches and quick mist, then just patches on their own. I liked how discreet they were.

What was the best advice you were given during your quit?

Be patient with yourself — it takes time to adjust, but it really does get easier.

Do you have any advice you would like to share with other smokers who might be thinking about accessing our service?

Find something to do with your hands — it makes a big difference when trying to quit.

What has given you the most satisfaction about quitting smoking?

Being able to say NO when someone offers me a cigarette. I’m so proud of myself.

Have there been any significant moments you would like to share?

There haven’t been any major moments, but I’ve become more health-conscious — I’ve now joined the weight management programme.
